The following comments come from our clients who have volunteered to allow us to present them to potential clients of NRC:
Matt has several skills as a counselor that I have appreciated during the five months I was in counseling. The first skill is his ability to ask questions that go right to the heart of the issue. Sometimes I did not like his questions, however, through answering them I was able to begin to see more clearly the real problem. Secondly, Matt challenged my thinking pattern. He helped me to begin to see how my thought pattern was dysfunctional. He also showed me a way to begin making my own decisions based on my priorities instead of impulsive thinking. Finally, the books, handouts, and exercises Matt had me read or complete were helpful. They showed me new ways of looking at different situations. They taught me life skills to use to deal with problems in my life.
Jessica Buczek has been my counselor for about 18 months now. Her friendly professionalism has been a joy to work with. Jessica’s warm and caring demeanor has offered the safe atmosphere I’ve needed to address lifelong unhealthy patterns of thinking and behavior related to dysfunctional family of origin issues, childhood sexual abuse and multiple traumas. Her therapeutic style has been rather holistic and flexible, using diverse skills, therapeutic tools and types of therapies as needed for my healing process. She has been supportive of my needs and sensitive to my trust issues and fear of change by including me in the planning process and helping me learn how to accept change as it comes. Jessica continues to help me understand my childhood experiences and how they affect my adulthood. Through the use of Prolonged Exposure Therapy, the effects of childhood traumas have less impact on my life and I am no longer in bondage to the fears and behaviors of avoidance related to those specific traumas. Jessica challenges my unhealthy ways of coping and distorted thinking by teaching me to identify the distortions, find and put into practice healthier alternatives, and by providing constructive feedback and guidance. She continues to help me better understand myself and others in my life. One thing I personally appreciate is that Jessica intentionally listens to my problems and processes my issues through the lens of the Holy Spirit. This example has been encouraging to me as I learn how to process my issues for myself, learn how to make healthy choices, learn how to deepen my faith, trust and relationship with Jesus and discover my identity in Him. I am thankful to be on this journey and grateful for Jessica’s part in it. Coming to NRC has been life changing.
